What does a woman look for when buying a handbag/purse?
When I buy a bag I pay attention to a number of issues.
Lines -
I like a simple bag with simple lines. Not
a lot of ornamentation, not a lot of fancy texture or tooling of leather, just
simple lines (although exterior pockets are good).
Color -
I won’t buy a brown or tan or beige bag.
I own a lot of black bags but I also own bags in many other colors, like cobalt
blue, teal, Kelly green, and violet. Grey is OK.
Weight
- I don’t like bags that are heavy even when they are empty.
Size -
I like a bag that is big enough to carry my iPad mini in it along with a
good-sized wallet and perhaps a Moleskine notebook plus tissues, hand lotion,
lip balm, pens, a little makeup, and other necessities. I don’t insist on this
for all bags, but for an everyday bag it is necessary. Bonus points for being
big enough to hold my 13″ MacBook Pro and power cord.
Security
- I like a bag that zips closed (a
flap over the zipper is OK), which makes it harder to get pickpocketed.
Weather
resistance - I live in a place where it rains a lot eight months of the year.
So I look for a bag that will protect its contents in wet conditions.
Carry
strap - I only buy crossbody bags. I will not buy a bag that cannot be carried
hands-free, arms-free.
Because
of my preferences around weight, size, and weather resistance, I often choose nylon bags. I own several from Prada
and several from MZ Wallace that are very good.
